After two decades of building with structural insulated panels, we've heard just about every question a homeowner or a skeptical builder can throw at us. The honest ones are the best, because they usually reveal a misunderstanding that's easy to clear up. So let's take the questions we hear most and answer them straight.
Some of these come from customers weighing a first SIP build. Some come from trades who've only ever worked stick. And a fair share come from our own crew when they run into a detail for the first time. All of them deserve a real answer.
What Are SIPs Actually Made Of?
A structural insulated panel is a sandwich, and the sandwich is the whole trick. A thick core of rigid foam insulation — most often expanded polystyrene, or EPS — is bonded under high pressure and heat to two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB).
That bond is what makes a SIP a structural panel rather than a slab of insulation with boards glued on. The three layers act as one composite unit, carrying vertical loads, resisting wind and shear, and managing the building's heat loss all in a single wall. Nothing about it is exotic; it's just the foam and the boards engineered to work as one piece.
How Do They Compare to a Regular Stud Wall?
The comparison people actually care about is energy performance, and there SIPs win on paper and in practice. A conventional 2x6 stud wall with fiberglass sits around R-19 nominal, and because of the wood studs stealing insulation value and the air leaks at every joint, the real-world number is lower than the label suggests.
A 6.5-inch SIP wall is around R-24, and a 10.25-inch panel is closer to R-38. But the headline number isn't the R-value; it's the airtightness. Because SIPs come together as continuous sheets with sealed joints rather than a framework whose cavities need filling, you get dramatically less air infiltration. Drop-in infiltration alone and you can be looking at 30% to 50% lower heating and cooling loads than a comparable stick home.
Can You Retrofit SIPs into an Existing Home?
This one comes up a lot, and the honest answer is: usually not as a full wall system. SIPs shine when they're the structural envelope from the start, because they replace the framing rather than covering it. Slapping panels onto an existing stick home often means you've paid for structure and insulation you already have.
You can do legitimate retrofit work — SIP roof panels over existing trusses when replacing a roof, or SIP panels used as garage attachments and additions where you're building new structure anyway. But if the goal is tightening up an existing envelope, a well-executed combination of air sealing, insulation upgrades, and new windows will get you more for your money than forcing panels where they don't naturally fit.
Aren't SIPs Only for Flat, Box-Shaped Houses?
This is the myth that surprises people the most, because the answer is a firm no. The panels are factory-cut to the shape of your building, and that shape can include hip roofs, gables, dormers, and complex floor plans. The factory will cut panels to match any geometry you design, complete with openings for windows, doors, and chases.
What changes is the complexity of the panel layout and the cost of the custom cutting, not whether it's possible. We build SIP homes with cathedral great rooms and interesting rooflines all the time. The panels are the most flexible part of the system, not the most restrictive.
How Do They Feel to Live In?
People who live in SIP homes tend to describe the same things without being prompted: it's quiet, it's comfortable, and it doesn't have drafts. The continuous air barrier that saves energy also keeps out the sound of wind and traffic, and because there's no big temperature swing room-to-room, the house feels steady rather than 'swingy.'
There's also something to be said for the peace of mind. With fewer air leaks and a tight envelope, there's less moisture traveling through your walls, which means less of the hidden mold and rot that plagues leakier construction. A SIP home is a genuinely better place to live, not just a better spreadsheet.
Do They Cost More?
The honest answer is that the panel system itself can carry a slightly higher upfront materials cost than budget stick framing, but that gap is narrower than most people assume, and it disappears when you account for labor savings, reduced waste, faster build time, and a smaller HVAC system.
The real argument is total cost of ownership. A tighter, better-insulated shell means lower utility bills for every year you own the home, and a durable, airtight envelope means fewer repair and maintenance surprises.
